Favorite Essential Oils for Stress

Stress has become such a common reason for many who seek treatment when they enter my office. This year alone has brought some heavy weight with it and it doesn't look like things will be calming down any time soon. However, in the middle of the chaotic storm, I always have some sort of on-the-go remedy to ease the stress and calm the anxiety that might creep in throughout the day. Essential oils being one of them.

Essential oils have been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. Being the root of pharmaceuticals, oils from plants have shown their strength by being the basis of natural healing in a number of cultures. In some cultures, this form of healing was used in practices for the mind, body, and soul.

In my venture of using aromatherapy and essential oils in my treatments, I have found these specific oils to be my favorites.

Lavender

I love using this oil! Lavender has an incredible amount of healing properties. It is known for its helping hand as being an antibacterial, anti-fungal, wound healing, and promotes emotional balance. The aromatic aspect of the oil has an influence on the nervous system which promotes a sense of well being and a positive conscious allowing the body to release tension and stress.

I tend to use this oil in my diffuser while the patient is relaxing during treatment. However, if needed to apply on the skin, you are able to do so directly. I would use a carrier oil just to be sure of any possible skin irritation on sensitive skin.

Chamomile (Roman)

This lovely flower has been known for its tea form to help reduce stress, improve insomnia, and combat depression. Chamomile brings with it its calming and relaxing effects through its aromatic use as well.

I using this in the diffuser during treatments but also as a spray. I like to spray the room to create a relaxing environment. I add 10 drops of chamomile oil per every ounce of water in a glass spray bottle, shake well, and then spray.

Sandalwood

Ahhh, Sandalwood. The aroma from this oil is definitely one of my favorites. I have used the oil for years due to its aim for clearing space and promoting positive energy. During the ancient times, the oil was traditionally used to enhance meditation. It has also been used for its antidepressant and sedative effects on the nervous system. The aromatherapy effect helps to ground and balance the emotions.

As a treatment, I apply this oil directly to the palms of my hands, using one or two drops at the most. I then cup my hands and create an inhaler around my nose. I inhale for a full breath, hold for 5 seconds and repeat for 5 more times. Each time I breathe in deeper and slower. Instantly I feel my stress decrease.

Peppermint

Peppermint is a great oil to uplift the spirits. I typically combine it with lavender oil for many uses. One being the relaxing property lavender brings but the invigorating aroma peppermint provides. The two complement each other in such a synergistic way it is sure to give any environment that sense of calm.

During stressful moments, I use this oil in my diffuser or even create my hand inhaler. I even mix one to two drops of both lavender and peppermint with a carrier oil and massage the mixture over my tense muscles after a long day. Together both oils help to relax the muscles and reduce stress.

Clary Sage

This herb has been used for centuries! It is interesting to know that this particular herb has been used for its aid in calming the nervous system and clearing the skin. A great match with chamomile to relieve stress and anxiety. Clary sage is a nerve tonic, which means it aims to regulate the nervous system by initiating the parasympathetic system. It also acts as a sedative that helps to promote sleep.

As you may already know, I use this one in my diffuser and in the chamomile spray for that added touch of calm and relax. If you are not a huge fan of chamomile, you can add clary sage oil to your diffuser by itself.

So these are just a few of my favorite essential oils. They are used interchangeably during times of high stress or anxiety. I use them throughout the day in the treatment room for my patients as well as for myself.

Try a couple to see what works best for you. Let these ancient plants help you get through the highs and lows of the tension and anxiety by soothing your mind, body, and soul.

Breathe In, Calm Down: Essential Oils for Stress Management

In our fast-paced, often overwhelming world, stress has become a constant companion. But what if there was a natural, aromatic way to find a moment of peace? Enter essential oils, nature's fragrant gift, offering a powerful tool for stress management.

The Science Behind the Scents:

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts that contain volatile aromatic compounds. These compounds interact with the olfactory system, which is directly connected to the brain's limbic system, the area responsible for emotions and memory. This connection explains why certain scents can 1 evoke strong emotional responses and promote relaxation.

How Essential Oils Can Help with Stress:

  • Calming the Nervous System: Certain essential oils, like lavender and chamomile, have sedative properties that can calm the nervous system and reduce feelings of anxiety.
  • Promoting Relaxation: Inhaling essential oils can trigger the release of neurotransmitters like serotonin and GABA, which promote relaxation and improve mood.
  • Reducing Stress Hormones: Studies have shown that some essential oils can help lower cortisol levels, the body's primary stress hormone.
  • Improving Sleep: Stress often disrupts sleep, but essential oils like lavender and cedarwood can promote restful sleep.
  • Grounding and Centering: Earthy scents like frankincense and sandalwood can help to ground and center the mind, reducing feelings of overwhelm.
